Fool Me Once

Hip-Hop

Inspiration

I wrote Fool Me Once to show the duality of America. It’s written as a man who figured out that he’s been getting played. He’s in a bad relationship, and suddenly realizes the game.

[Verse 1]
You flash your smile like a loaded gun,
Say you’re different, but you’re the same one.
Oh, you play both sides of the street,
Whisper “Baby, it’s only you”—what a feat.

[Pre-Chorus]
You act like it’s love, but I know the deal,
Same old con, just a different heel.
Yeah, you’re slick, but I’ve seen your hand,
All your promises turn to sand.

[Chorus]
Fool me once with your pretty lies,
Dress it up in a sweet disguise.
You say you hate him, but you dance all night,
Two-step lovers in the same damn light.
Oh, I see the game, yeah, I know your name—
But you’ll never change, no, you’ll never change.

[Verse 2]
You paint me the villain, you play the saint,
But your halo’s just a dollar faint.
Oh, you swear you’re breaking free,
But the cage you’re in was built by “we.”

[Bridge]
Round and round, the same old show,
Who’s the thief? Hell if I know.
You steal my heart, you steal my pay,
Then blame the ghosts of yesterday.

[Chorus]
Fool me once with your pretty lies,
Dress it up in a sweet disguise.
You say you hate him, but you dance all night,
Two-step lovers in the same damn light.
Oh, I see the game, yeah, I know your name—
But you’ll never change, no, you’ll never change.

[Outro]
So play your part, I’ll play mine,
We’ll keep pretending it’s love this time.
