Against the Odds

Jazz, R&B

Inspiration

I wrote Against the Odds based on my childhood. A kid who lost his mother before I turned 5 and my father was in San Quentin for armed robbery, I know how society viewed me. But I never succumbed to the idea that my life was doomed. In fact, I felt quite the opposite.

[Verse]

They whispered low, said, “Boy, you’ll see,

This world ain’t built for you or me.”

But in the cracks where shadows play,

I found my light, I found my way.

[Chorus]

Against the odds, I made my stand,

Turning nothing into grand.

No limits here, I’m breaking free,

A living dream, just wait and see.

[Verse 3]

With every step, their doubts I shed,

Carved my path, where none had tread.

A black boy’s strength—a quiet shout,

Overcame their every doubt.

 [Verse 2]

The pavement hot, the nights were cold,

Dreams were quiet but fierce to hold.

Every “no” just lit my fire,

Climbing higher, building desire.

[Bridge]

They told me, “Sit,” I chose to rise,

Their ceilings couldn’t stop my skies.

The beat of drums, my heart in tune,

I’m singing loud beneath the moon.

[Chorus]

Against the odds, I made my stand,

Turning nothing into grand.

No limits here, I’m breaking free,

A living dream, just wait and see.
